Britannica claims this language family was formerly considered to be part of the Sino-Tibetan languages, but that most of the similarities are incidental and that the relationship appears to be false. It also mentions suggestions that the Tai are closer to the [Austronesian languages]?. At least, I think they should be kept separate until something more definite appears.
