The Estonia was a passenger ship. In September 28 1994 it sank during a storm in the [Baltic sea]?, killing 852 passengers and crew. The investigation of the accident came to the conclusion that a combination of bad seamanship, technical deficiencies and foul weather caused the disaster.

The shipwreck caused a collective trauma within Swedish society, the repercussions reaching at least to 2001, as speculation and diving at the wreck continues.
