The diprotodon was the largest marsupial that ever lived. It existed from 1.6 million years ago until about 40,000 years ago (most of the Pleistocene epoch). Fossils of have been found in many places across Australia, including complete skulls and skeletons, as well as hair and foot impressions. More than one female skeleton has been found with a baby lying where it died while still in its mother's pouch. Diprotodon co-existed with humans; diprotodon bones have been found with butchering marks from Aboriginal people's tools.
