The members of Blue Öyster Cult began to come together in the late 1960s on [Long Island, New York]? as a band called "Soft White Underbelly", after the prompting of critic Sandy Pearlman. Changing the name to Blue Oyster Cult in 1970 became one of the more succesful, and articulate, heavy metal bands of the 1970s, are still playing the the 21st century, but are probably best known for the single "Don't Fear The Reaper" (1975).
