species Ardipithecus ramidus A very early hominid genus (that is, of the subfamily Homininae). Because it is much like the African apes (genus Pan and genus Gorilla), it is considered by some to be on the chimpansee? rather than hominid branch, but most consider it hominid because of a likeness in teeth with Australopithecus.
