Swing Dance

While Ballroom Dance includes most of the swing dances popular today, the swing and ballroom dance cultures are distinct. Club-style swing dancers often find ballroom dancers inexpressive and work directly in patterns versus dancing with the music. Conversely, ballroom dancers may get frustrated when a swing dancer doesn't lead a step "correctly", lead an entire pattern, or when they play with the counts to match the music or to match a break in the music. Of course, these are generalizations.

Popular swing dances include:

Lindy Hop -- Charleston -- East Coast Swing (aka: Triple step 6 count swing or single step Rockabilly swing)-- Balboa -- Collegiate Shag -- [Carolina Shag]? -- and [St.Louis Shag]? (closely related to Charleston).

[Country Swing]? is yet another division of swing with a largely distinct culture. [WestCoast Swing]? is danced in the same environment as Country Swing and more widely know among the country swing dancers.

As with all swing dancing the lead and follow must have a connection.
