Sir Joshua Reynolds

English painter (born Plympton St. Maurice, Devon, 1723-1792). With rival Thomas Gainsborough the dominant English portraist of the second half of the 18th century. Joshua Reynolds painted in more of an idealized fashion than his rival. A brilliant academic, his lectures ("Discourses") on art are remembered for their sensitivity and perception.
