Showing revision 3

Selim I (1512-20) is an Ottoman Emperor, who extended Ottoman territory by taking southern provinces of Syria, Palestine, Egypt, holy cities of Mecca and Medina under control. After the invasion of the latter two cities, he announced himself as the guardian of Islam religion, a rank, which had been lost long before after the Mongol onslaught of Abbasid caliphate in 13th century.
