The head of state of the United States is called the President, who also serves the functions of [chief executive]? and [commander in chief]? of the armed forces. By current law, the U.S. president serves a four-year term and may only be reelected once; this limitation was added after Franklin Delano Roosevelt became the first president to serve more than two terms. The [Vice President of the United States]? becomes the President upon the death, resignation, or removal by impeachment of the former President. Should the Vice President be unable to assume the Presidency, next in line is the [Speaker of the House of Representatives]?, followed the [President Pro Tempore]? of the United States Senate.
