Thomas Jefferson (b. 1743 d. 1826) was the third president of the United States, from 1801 to 1809.

He was the primary author of the Declaration of Independence, and a source of many other contributions to American culture. Achievements of his presidency include the Lewis and Clark Expedition and the Louisiana Purchase.

His home in Virginia was Monticello? near [Charlottesville, Virginia]?, and he help to found the [University of Virginia]?.

Jefferson's ideal for the United States was that of a agricultural nation of yeoman farmers in contrast to the vision of [Alexander Hamilton]? who envisioned a nation of commerce and manufacturing.
