Peter Duesberg

Controversial US scientist who estranged scientific community by three claims:

  1. disputing the importance of oncogenes in cancers (1983)
  2. claiming that HIV does not cause AIDS (1988)("Duesberg hypothesis")
  3. proposing aneuploidy? hypothesis of cancer (1997)

His early scientific career was remarkable: He isolated the first cancerogenic gene from a virus aged 33, at 36 earned tenure at the [University of California at Berkeley]?, at 49 invited to the [National Academy of Sciences]?. His controversial hypotheses caused dwindling support and withdrawal of funds. Duesberg was forced to fund his research from charitable contributions and to move to Germany

South African President Thabo Mbeki voiced support for "Duesberg hypothesis" and sufferred substantial political embarrassment as a result
