doesn't belong in main entry yet: my favorite category are disused periodizations: 19th century called 15th century painting in Flanders 'Primitives' (Les Primitifs) and called 14th century Italian painting "Italian Primitives" - see, the Italians WERE ahead of the rest of Europe at being Renaissance, even if it was a primitive one! --MichaelTinkler
Interesting. In philosophy, "early modern" seems to refers to, essentially, the 17th and 18th centuries--after the Renaissance. --LMS
