An astronomical term for a pair of stars that appear to be close together, but are actually just along the same line of sight, and are nowhere near each other in space. The most famous of these, and the first telescopic double discovered (1650), are Mizar and Alcor. Contrast with [binary stars]?, which are gravitationally bound to one another.
