Ontogeny (or ontogenesis) describes the origin and the development of an organism from the fertilized? egg? to its mature? form. Ontology is covered by developmental biology.

The idea that ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny, with the development of an organism mirroring the evolutionary developmnent of the species, is discredited today.
