Kashubians or Kassubians came into the region between
Oder and
Vistula river over a thousand years ago. They lived in that part of the land, later called
Pomerania, named after the Pomeranen, who also moved there . They were subjects of the
Holy Roman Empire. Their capital city was
Kolberg in Pomerania. They spread and came to live east of
Danzig. They were a small minority in Pomerania.
Some 200,000 Kashubians still speak Kashubian, a West Slavic dialect, mainly in north central Poland.
