(1818-1895) American abolitionist.

Frederick Douglass escaped slavery to become a leader of the anti-slavery movement in the United States as an influential lecturer, author, and publisher (of the newspaper [North Star]?).

His work spanned the years of prior to and during the Civil War. He conferred with President Abraham Lincoln on the treatment of black soldiers in 1863 and with President Andrew Johnson on the subject of black suffrage.

In later years, he served as a diplomat representing the United States in Haiti.
