He is famous now for his childrens books, which he wrote using the pen-name, derived from a latinisation of his forenames. They are Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and [Through the Looking Glass]?, whose central character Alice is based upon Alice Liddell, young daughter of the Dean of Christ Church in Oxford, England. He also wrote a considerable amount of (mostly nonsense) poetry, including Jabberwocky, Phantasmagoria? and the mock-epic [The Hunting of the Snark]?, and a long children's work published in two parts as [Sylvie and Bruno]? and [Sylvie and Bruno Concluded]?.
Also surviving are nine volumes of personal diaries and a wide range of letters written to the many children (mostly pre-pubescent girls) whom he befriended throughout his life. Much has been written on the nature of these relationships, but as of 2001 there remains no convincing evidence of any impropriety -- the posthumous destruction by the Dodgson estate of some passages of the diaries notwithstanding.
He is also notable as one of the pioneers of photography: his photographs are considered among the best amateur photographs of the period, if not of all times. His favorite subjects were little girls, who posed sometimes in costumes and sometimes completely naked, and famous people.
Charles Lutwidge Dodgson had a stutter and he was deaf in one ear.
He died on January 14, 1898 in Guildford?, England due to complications of bronchitis?.
