One of my friends is an "authority" on real ale. I'll mail him and see if he can help us out with this one (between visits to the pub :-) ) sjc

The site lists different things the group is about. I'm still not sure what they mean by "real ale"--as compared to what?

The major distinction is between how the beer is stored and served. The major breweries have a vested interest in promoting "keg" beer which is pressurised whereas CAMRA are advocates for "cask" beer which is the traditional unpressurised method of dispensation. There is a world of difference in the taste - cask is much more pleasant. sjc

So they're not about also brewing "real" ale from malted barley (vs. other grains?)
