Alexandria is a
city in
Egypt on the
Mediterranean Sea. It was named after
Alexander the Great, who founded the city. After Alexander's death, it was the seat of the
Ptolemaic dynasty, quickly became one of the greatest cities of the
Hellenistic world, and has remained one of the largest and most important cities of Egypt ever since; nowadays it is the nation's second largest city.
In ancient times, Alexandria was known for its lighthouse (one of the Seven Wonders of the World) and its library (the biggest in the world). Ongoing marine archaeology in the harbor of Alexandria is revealing details of the Alexandria of the Ptolemaic dynasty.
In April of 2002, a new library building, [Bibliotheca Alexandrina]?, will be officially inaugurated in Alexandria. It has been built with the help of the United Nations.
