Semantics is a subfield of linguistics that is traditionally defines a the study of meaning. One area of study is the meaning of compounds, another is the study of relations between different linguistic expression (antonymy?, hyperonymy?, hyponymy?, synonymy?). Another field is how the meaning of a word changed over time (see etymology).
