A parish is a subdivision of the Roman Catholic church, and also several other churches. In general, there is one local church per a parish.
Parish is also a geographical subdivision used in several parts of the world, such as Louisiana and New South Wales. It originated as a religious subdivision, but over time has come to be a purely civil one.
