The head of state of the United States is called the President, who also serves the functions of [chief executive]? and [commander in chief]? of the armed forces. By current law, the U.S. president serves a four-year term and may only be re-elected once; this limitation was added after Franklin Delano Roosevelt became the first president to serve more than two terms. See United States Constitution.

The Vice President of the United States of America becomes the President upon the death, resignation, or removal by impeachment of the former President. Should the Vice President be unable to assume the Presidency, next in line is the [Speaker of the House of Representatives]?, followed the [President Pro Tempore]? of the United States Senate.
