Silvio Berlusconi is an Italian entrepreneur and politician. He is the owner of an Italian media empire, and is one of the wealthiest men in Italy. He apparently used political pull throughout his business career, and is frequently accused of various sorts of corruption. These accusations are dismissed by Berlusconi as political smears.
He became Prime Minister in 1994, but was quickly ousted from office by a coalition of opposition parties. In 2001 he again ran for Prime Minister as leader of the center-right so-called House of Freedoms coalition.
