At issue was a law known as the Butler Law, which favoured Creationism to be taught in public schools. John T. Scopes, a 24-year old science teacher and football coach, was hired specifically to bring this law to the court system in Dayton, Tennessee. The ACLU? was involved in bringing the law to trial.
The stage play [Inherit the Wind]? (1955), later adapted as a film in 1960 by [Stanley Kramer]?, was (very loosely) based around this trial.
