Satire

Satire is a genre of writing which principally ridicules its subject (individuals, organisations, states) as an intended means of provoking change.

Some examples of satire are:

• Gulliver's Travels and A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift
• Candide by Voltaire
• Erewhon by [Samuel Butler 2]?
• Penguin Island by Anatole France
• most of the works of Mark Twain
• C. Northcote Parkinson was a British 20th century writer of satire.

• The Monty Python opus
• [Private Eye]? magazine
• The Onion's "reporting"

Satire enjoyed a renaissance in the UK in the early 1960s with the Satire Boom, led by such luminaries as Peter Cook, [Alan Bennett]?, [Jonathan Miller]?, [David Frost]?, [Eleanor Bron]? and [Dudley Moore]?.
