A large class of
arthropods, comprising the
insects together with three small related orders. Hexapods all have bodies divided into an anterior head with mouthparts and usually a pair of antennae, a thorax composed of three segments each with a pair of legs, and an abdomen that ranges from 4-12 segments. The appendages are typical of the
Uniramia. The true insects are set apart by having ectognathous (exposed) mouthparts, whereas in other groups they are entognathous (enveloped), and always have an 11-segmented abdomen. Most insects also have two pairs of wings. Aside from them, the most common forms are the springtails, which can be found virtually everywhere in soil.
