Africa was subject to imperialism like and other non-Western lands were. The "new imperialsim" (1880 - 1900), as it was called, took place in Africa but also Asia.

During the period before World War I, European nations were scrambling to gain more power and more money through the use of colonies. Most of these were in Africa and Asia, but a few colonies were in South American and the Pacific. Here is a list of the partition of Africa from the years 1885 to 1914; it shows the colonies as they were known then and who rules them:
