Bremen is a city-state in Germany (official name: Hansestadt Bremen, referring to its membership in the medieval Hanseatic League), one of 16 Bundeslands.
The state of Bremen consists of two cities: Bremen is completely surrounded by Niedersachsen. Bremerhaven is further downstream, on the shore of the North Sea (the name means Bremen's harbor).
