An organization of Dutch merchants interested in colonising the Americas and West Africa. They were granted a charter by the Netherlands in 1621.

The most notable effort of the company was the founding of [New Netherland]?, including the city of New Amsterdam in parts of what are today New York, Connecticut, Delaware, and New Jersey. Other colonies included Guiana?, and an abortive attempt to take Brazil away from the Portuguese, which ended after 30 years of warfare.

The [New Netherland]? colonization effort did not spread further, in part due to a fierce rivalry with the English, who conquered New Netherland in 1664?, and in part due to the difficulty of attracting settlers under the company's initial policy of the [Patroon system]?, which granted vast power over settlers to the men who brought them to the colony.

In 1674?, the company reorganized to concentrate primarily on the african slave trade.

The company charter expired in 1791.
