Manhattan, under the
Dutch rule, was called "Nieuw Amsterdam". Although a somewhat thriving colony, The Netherlands were out-colonised by the British, who had stationed more troops there than the Dutch had inhabitants in New Amsterdam by the time it was transferred to the British.
[Peter Stuyvesant]? dealt with the English and traded New Amsterdam for the country of Suriname.
Many of the inhabitants of New Amsterdam disliked Peter Stuyvesant, or found his rule oppressive. As a result, the colony surrendered to the British without firing a shot.
