The Vandals were a Germanic group that entered the late Roman Empire. One subgroup of the Vandals was the Celtic-Germanic Lygier or Lugier. Liegnitz in Silesia is named after the Celtic god Lug or Ligo, as are the cities of Leiden? in the Netherlands and Lyons in France. Another large subgroup was the Silinger, after which Silesia- Slesia-Schlesien is named. The Vandals gave their name to the province of Andalusia (originally, Vandalusia), in Spain, where some of them settled. Their name became a byword for meaningless destruction. |
