Saxons received their name from the axe they used in ancient times, the Saksa . The Saxons and Angels, which had under Hengist and Horsa gone to Britain,gave the name to the Angel-Saxons- or Anglo-Saxons. Angelland-England is the land of the Angeln etc. Saxons did not want to lose independence and the Franks and Charlemagne butchered 4000 Saxons. In 808 Charlemagne forcibly removed Saxons, who fought him, from the Jutland peninsula Schleswig-Holstein/Mecklenburg? Baltic Sea area and moved Abodrites,Obotrites (Slavic-Wends) in, who had taken on Christianity and pledged allegiance to him.

Under Carolingian rule, the Saxons were reduced to a tributary status. There is evidence that the Saxons, as well as Slavic tributaries like the Abodrites and the Wends, often provided troops to their Carolingian overlords.
