Iowa State is primarily known for its degree programs in engineering and agriculture.

The sports teams are nicknamed the "Cyclones". The mascot is a cardinal named "Cy" (a vestige from the days when the teams were nicknamed the "Cardinals"). Their colors are red and gold, and they play in the Big 12 Conference.

Some names associated with Iowa State:

* [John Vincent Atanasoff]? and [Clifford E. Berry]? (see also Atanasoff Berry Computer)
* George Washington Carver
* [Carrie Chapman Catt]?
* [Christian Petersen]?, sculptor, whose works appear around campus.
* [Grant Wood]?, artist; the Parks Library features numerous murals by Wood.
