Kirsan N. Ilyumzhinov


FIDE President Kirsan N. Ilyumzhinov was born on the 5th of April 1962 in Elista, capital of the Republic of Kalmykia in Russia.

In 1989, he graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, the most prestigious diplomatic University, and learned Japanese during this period.

He immediately started his business career as manager of the Soviet-Japanese joint venture Liko-Raduga and later founded the Bank "Step" in Kalmykia.

In 1990 he was elected a member of the Russian Parliament. In January 1993, he became President of the Russian Chamber of Entrepreneurs.

In April 1993 he ran successfully for the Presidency of the Kalmyk Republic on a campaign of private initiative and prosperity. As President, he became a Senator in the Upper House of the Russian Parliament. In 1995 he was reelected President of Kalmykia until the year 2002.
