Dennis Ritchie, with Ken Thompson and others, developed the first versions of the Unix operating system. Probably Ritchie's most important contribution was to develop the C programming language, in which Unix was (re)written. With Brian Kernighan, he wrote the seminal C book: The C Programming Language.
