Bulgarian is one of the Slavic languages, and the most widely spoken language in Bulgaria. Bulgarian is a member of the South Slavic group, along with Macedonian, Serbo-Croatian, and Slovene.

The Glagolitic alphabet was invented for the writing of Old Slavonic by missionary Saints Cyril and Methodius as they spread the gospel to the Bulgarians and Moravians.
