The Australian Defence Force numbers about 53,000 active duty personnel. This exceeds the current target of 50,000 personnel because of short-term increases necessary to fulfill Australia's commitment in East Timor. The military although small numerically is technologically sophisticated. The [Royal Australian Navy]? (RAN) front-line fleet currently comprises 6 guided-missile frigates, 2 ANZAC class patrol frigates (of 8 to be built) and 3 or 4 (of 6) of the indigeously built Collins Class submarines, widely regarded as the best conventional (i.e. Diesel-Electric, non-nuclear powered) boats in the world. The F/A-18 fighter (about 60 to 70 in service), built in Australia under license from the U.S. manufacturer, is the principal combat aircraft of the [Royal Australian Air Force]? (RAAF), backed by 35 U.S.-built F-111C F-111G and RF-111 strike aircraft, and PC-3 Orion Patrol and Maritime Strike aircraft (several recently -- and secretly - upgraded to the EP-3 type). Other aircraft types, such as C130 transports, BAE Hawk strike/support/trainer jets, Blackhawk and Seahawk helicopters, and others are operated by the RAAF, Army and RAN.
