A basic unit of written and spoken language...

a written word consists of letters forming syllables.

On computers, a word refers to a small collection of bits.

Modern computers use 2, 4, or 8 bytes per word (16, 32, or 64 bits per word). Older computers sometimes used 36 bit words and words other than 16, 32, or 64 bits per word.

Also of note, the earliest computers did not use binary representation. They used [base 10]? representation.
