In the linguistic sense, a word is a unit of speech? or writing that symbolizes or communicates a meaning. A word may consist of one or more morphemes.
In relation to computers, a word refers to a small collection of bits.

Modern computers use 2, 4, or 8 bytes per word (16, 32, or 64 bits per word). Older computers sometimes used 36 bit words and words other than 16, 32, or 64 bits per word.

Also of note, the earliest computers did not use binary representation. They used [base 10]? representation.

Word is also the name of a word processor produced by Microsoft.
