Winter solstice

The [Northern hemisphere]?'s shortest day and hence the longest night - ususally a date near December 21st. Naturally the reverse applies to the [Southern hemisphere]?. This is the shortest day because at the time of the solstice the sun is farthest south from the [celestial equator]?.
