One subgroup of the Vandals was the Celtic-Germanic Lygier or Lugier. Liegnitz in Silesia is named after the Celtic god Lug or Ligo, as are the cities of Leiden? in the Netherlands and Lyons in France.
Another large subgroup was the Silinger, after which Silesia- Slesia-Schlesien is named.
The Vandals gave their name to the province of Andalusia (originally, Vandalusia), in Spain, where some of them settled. Their name became a byword for meaningless destruction.
The Vandals adopted Arianism, a branch of Christianity that believed that Jesus Christ was not God, but a separate created being directly beneath God. This belief was in opposition to the belief of the main Christian group in the Roman Empire, which later grew into Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy.
The Vandals settled in the Roman provinces of Numidia and Africa in 428, whilst Augustine was bishop of Hippo. Wandalen-Vandals under king Geiserich settled in North Africa; but they were defeated by Byzantine? forces led by Belisarius? on behalf of the emperor Justinian I in 533.
The Vandals moved back to eastern Germania and the kings of Sweden as part of the empire in the 18th century still held the titles of kings of SVE Sweden, Gothorum and Vandalorum , etc .
