Showing revision 3
The USS Greeneville is a submarine in the navy of the United States. On February 9, 2001, the submarine struck and sank a Japanese fishery? training ship, the Ehime-Maru, near Hawaii. Nine crew members of the Ehime-Maru drowned, several of whom were high-school students from Uwajima?, Japan.

The ensuing investigation revealed that the accident occurred while the submarine was demonstrating rapid surfacing for a group of American civilians on board, causing controversy and public outcry. Cmdr. Scott Waddle, who was acting as skipper on the Greeneville during the collision, retired from the Navy following the investigation.

Construction of a memorial in Hawaii to the Ehime-Maru and her dead has been proposed.
