The
state is the primary political subdivision of the
United States. Note that this is somewhat confusing, in that the word
state also refers to soverign politicial entities, such as the
United States (see
state).
(Other countries with states in this sense include Australia, India, Malaysia and Nigeria.)
Some (potentially) confusing things about U.S. states:
- "Georgia" is the name of both a U.S. state, and the name of an independent state in Caucasia.
- New York is both a state, and a city in that state
- Washington is both a state, and a city in the District of Columbia
