In general terms, the act of transforming a message or signal from one form to another.

In philology, it refers to taking a message (whether spoken, written, or otherwise recorded) rendered in one language into another language.

In biology and biochemistry, it refers to the process in which proteins are assembled within cells by the ribosome according to the genomic information carried by messenger RNA.
