A steel guitar is as the name suggests a guitar made of steel. Instead of sound coming from the resonating wood of the soundboard?, with a steel guitar the bridge is attached to the "cone", which acts like a loud speaker cone to produce the sound.

Steel guitars have a very distinctive tone. They are commonly found in country music, or blues, where they are often played with a slide.

Steel guitars are also known as resonator guitars, or dobro's. The latter name refers to a company which used to make these guitars.

Steel guitars should be differentiated from [pedal steel guitars]? which are a different instrument.
