Søren Aabye Kierkegaard (1813-1855) was a 19th century Danish philosopher, and is generally acknowledged as the first existentialist philosopher. Kierkegaard strongly rejected both the Hegelian philosophy of his time, and what he saw as the empty formalities of the Danish church of the day.

Kierkegaard's work is sometimes difficult to interpret, since he wrote most of his early work under various pseudonyms, and often these pseudo-authors will comment on the works of the earlier pseudo-authors.

Major Works:

Either/Or?
[Fear and Trembling]?
Repetition?
[Concluding Unscientific Postscript]?
[Stages On Life's Way]?
[The Sickness Unto Death]?
[Works of Love]?
