The Saxons were a large and powerful Germanic tribe located in what is now northwestern and eastern Germany and the Netherlands. A part of the Saxons, along with Angles, Jutes, Frisians?, and others, invaded Britain in the Early Middle Ages.

A majority of the Saxons remained in continental Europe and long avoided becoming Christians and being incorporated into the orbit of the Frankish kingdom, but were decisively conquered by Charlemagne in a long series of annual campaigns.

Saxons received their name from the axt they used in ancient times, the Saksa .

The Saxons and Angels, which had under Hengist and Horsa gone to Britain, gave the name to the Angel-Saxons- or Anglo-Saxons. Angelland-England is the land of the Angeln etc.

Saxons did not want to lose independence and the Franks and Charlemagne butchered 4000 Saxons. In 808 Charlemagne forcibly removed Saxons, who fought him, from the Juetland peninsula Schleswig-Holstein/Mecklenburg? Baltic Sea area and moved Abodrites,Obotrites (Slavic-Wends) in , who had taken on Christianity and pledged allegiance to him. Saxons , together with Baltic Aesti-Prussi-Galindians took part in earlier battles against Charlemagne , where Roland , his nephew was killed.
