The Sámi (also spelt Saami) are the aboriginal inhabitants of Northern Sweden, Norway and Finland. They call this area Sápmi. Population about 85,000, they are known as reindeer? herders. Many books and official documents call these people Lapps but they prefer to be called Sámi or Saami, the name they use for themselves. They speak several languages of their own from the Finno-Ugric family, related to Finnish but not to Swedish and kin.

See also aborigine?, other Northern peoples: Eskimo, Innu?, Inuit, Inuvialuit?, Aleut?.
