Ptolemy I Soter, one of Alexander the Great's generals established himself in Egypt as pharaoh after the death of Alexander, and his family ruled Egypt from 323 B.C. until the Roman conquest in 31 B.C. All the male rulers of the dynasty took the name "Ptolemy". The most famous member of the line was Cleopatra.
