Periodically, reports of kangaroos, Wallabies or their accompanying footprints have been made in places where one would not expect to hear of them--In other words, anywhere besides
Australia and its surrounding islands. While generally scoffed at by the scientific community, several photographs of the "phantom kangaroos" are undisputably genuine. Some explanations put forth are escaped zoo or circus animals, or publicity stunts by local businesses using photographs from Australia.
There is one verifiable example of a population of wallabies outside Australasia. There was (and maybe still is) a significant population of wallabies in Yorkshire, England. They are known to be the descendents of wallabies that were kept in a zoo, and released to the wild when the zoo went bankrupt in the 1930s. Reportedly, the population crashes whenever there is an unusually cold winter, but in a normal winter the wallabies have no trouble surviving.
